Maya 'Tecun Uman' Design Rug
Products details: Stunning handmade rug made on a foot-loom in the beautiful village of Momostenango. The character represented is Tecún Umán, or Tekun Umam in the K'iche' language, who was a great warrior in Guatemala. Tecún Umánn is considered a national hero for his courage and dignity, and for fighting to protect his land and people during the war against the Spaniards. Legend says that he was mortally wounded by the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado. The Quetzal bird descended on his body and the blood of the K'iche' warrior stained the bird's chest with red. Since then, the Quetzal has become the national bird of Guatemala.
